Pre-Nursing Concentration

Prospective students seeking admission to the nursing program who have not met the requirements for admission as outlined in the criteria for direct freshmen admission into the program can be admitted as an pre-nursing concentration student provided that they meet the following criteria:

  1. SAT score of 1040 or above or ACT score of 22 and above.
  2. A minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.2 on a 4.00 scale.
  3. High school completion of three units of laboratory science with preference given to biology, chemistry, and physics.
  4. High school completion of three units of college preparatory mathematics that include algebra, geometry, and algebra II.

Pre-nursing concentration students will be advised by the faculty within the Department of Academic Enrichment and Learning and will be registered for the following courses:

Fall

  • BIOL 116 and BIOL 117 Anatomy and Physiology for the Health Professions with lab - 4 credits
  • MATH 110 General Statistics - 3 credits
  • PSY 100 General Psychology - 3 credits
  • FYE 100 First Year Experience - 3 credits
  • ENG 103 English Composition - 3 credits Total Credits = 16

Spring

  • BIOL 118 and BIOL 119 Anatomy and Physiology for the Health Professions II with lab - 4 credits
  • HLTH/EXSC 105 Health and Wellness- 3 credits
  • CMST 111 Introduction to Communication - 3 credits
  • SOC 102 Introduction to Cultural Diversity - 3 credits
  • General Education Elective Course - 3 credits Total Credits = 16

Pre-nursing concentration students are required to complete the ten courses listed above (32 credits) with a grade of "C" or better, and achieve a MINIMUM cumulative GPA of 3.0 in order to be minimally qualified for consideration for admission into the nursing major.

However, achieving a GPA of 3.0 does not guarantee a seat in the nursing program. Pre-nursing students will fill the remaining seats in the sophomore nursing class with the selection process driven by the top academic performance of students in the required courses. Only 60 seats are available in the sophomore class. In any given year, 30 -40 students will be accepted into the sophomore nursing class depending on the cohort.   

Pre-nursing concentration students seeking fall admission into the nursing program as a sophomore student will need to apply by
February 1st. Students are to submit to the Nursing Department Admission,Progression and Graduation committee a letter indicating their interest in the nursing program, two letters of recommendation from professors at the college level who can speak of your academic performance in their class, along with all college transcripts and SAT scores. The nursing department is located in Denike 202.   .  

Pre-nursing concentration students who do not meet the 3.0 GPA or who are not accepted into the nursing major will be advised regarding their options.
